Trumann is a First Class City in Arkansas and is governed by the City/Council form of government. The Mayor is elected to a four your term in the November General Election. Alderman, two from each of the electoral wards in the city are elected to two-year terms. Alderman races are decided solely by the constituents in each of the wards, with each Ward being as equally populated as possible. Planning and ZoningAll construction, whether new or additions and improvements, are overseen by the City Planning and Zoning Commission with strict adherence to planning and zoning laws. Such ordinances plan for the orderly growth of the community and are enacted accordingly. Industrial DevelopmentThe Trumann Industrial Development Commission spearheads efforts to boost industrial and business development growth in the city. The nine-member board works closely with the City government and the Arkansas Department of Economic Development to attract new business and industry to the city, as well as handle the needs of existing business and industry. The city owns or has purchasing rights to five blocks of property for industrial use. Trumann has been designated as an “Arkansas Community of Excellence” by the Arkansas Department of Economic Development. Chamber of CommerceTrumann’s Chamber of Commerce is an active organization with a full-time staff, including the Chamber Executive Director and an Administrative Assistant. The Director further serves as the industrial development officer for the city and works closely with the Trumann Industrial Development Commission. The Chamber further supports the business and industrial promotional needs of the community and is responsible for the city’s annual Wild Duck Festival, an event that draws thousands to the city each year. Police Protection The Trumann Police Department is very informative on the problems that affect the citizens in Trumann. The department speaks at organizations dealing with the matter of public safety. During these meetings the topic that arises most often is the drug problem and what is being done to counteract this problem. The departments shows videos, gives examples of warning signs of drug use, examples of signs of a drug house or meth lab, and distribute information pamphlets. The department also has a program designed for the concerns of the youth, illegal drugs, dealing with strangers and importance of 911. The Trumann School has two School Resource Officers that patrol the halls and are there to talk to and help the children when they need them, they also implement programs in different subjects from time to time to help with problems that arise in the youths life. The Police Dept. has sixteen (16) full-time officers and the Trumann Public School has one (1), 1-Police Chief, 1-Lieutenant/Detective, 1-Patrolman/Criminal Investigator, 2-Sergeants,1-SRO, 1-Traffic Sergeant,2-Patrolamn 1st Class, 7 Patrol Officers, and 9 Reserve Patrol Officers. The school has one (1) SRO that is of their employment. This department provides each officer with their own police car. Each officer is also provided with an up to date Bullet Proof Vest, fully equipped Police Vehicles, and portable radios. All of the offices at the station is equipped with a computer and ACIC and NCIC access. Each officer is provided with a department issued handgun, and all officers are provided with a clothing allowance, for professional dress. The department has a 7 day 24 hour Detention Facility which is equipped with certified Jailers and Matrons, this department has direct contact with our local ambulance in case of emergency and all Jailers are informed on measures to take to keep the prisoners fed and safe. This Department always has contact with a supervisor, each shift has a supervisor with the rank of Sergeant, and also there is a Female Matron that is also a Sergeant. All of the Trumann Officers are certified. The officers take the minimum basic hours required and some elective courses. The Officers take ongoing training hours throughout their career to keep up with current changes in the law. The Trumann department has three certified professional instructors with additional certifications in Radar/Lidar. The Dispatch Center is open 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Calls are received through this office and this information is passed on to the officers over a High-Band Radio, which operates on VHF Frequency and is powered by a repeater system. This department is equipped with a ACIC/NCIC terminal and is operated by certified personnel. Trumann also has an active Neighborhood Watch program and has signs posted throughout the city.
